Factoids of the day: Back to school edition

Published August 18th, 2008

As students young and old head back to the hallowed halls of learning, the US Census Bureau reminds us of these three intriguing edu-factoids:

  • 26%: Percentage of elementary through high school students who have at least one foreign-born parent.
  • 56%: Percentage of undergraduates who are women.
  • 25%: Percentage of bachelor’s degrees awarded each year that are in business.

Educators today are becoming increasingly “data driven” and that’s a healthy thing. Factoids like this humanize the data process. Thanks for providing numerical data that I can add to my testing data as I work with my returning teachers. I’m a school administrator in rural America, where harvesting wind is beginning to replace the harvest of traditional crops on farms which have been sitting vacant in recent years. Bringing our educational process into the twenty-first century must be a priority for all of us.

More interesting education-related factoids are presented in a fascinating YouTube presentation called “Did You Know?” There’s a link to it on my website…I plan to use it with my staff to get conversations rolling.
