Midnight in the garden of art and design

Yesterday I made my first visit ever to Savannah, Georgia. Two observations. First, Savannah is one of the few places I’ve been to lately that looks like itself. It has its own authentic aesthetic and personality — town squares, Spanish moss, nifty architecture — and doesn’t seem like just another incarnation of Anywhere, USA. Second, the Savannah College of Art and Design — stop 2 on the MFA is the new MBA tour — is a cool place. The school even has its own store in downtown Savannah that sells the wares of students and alumni. And last night’s event at the Red Gallery (which for two hours became the Pink Gallery) was terrific. Many thanks to the students, faculty, administrators, and Savannah residents who filled the gallery and peppered me with comments and questions long after the wait staff had packed up all the food.
