For the last year, I’ve been saying — mostly to deaf ears — that arts education needs to be fundamental part of preparing our kids for the 21st century. Now comes a Guggenheim study that offers some empirical support for my bleatings.
New York City has a program Learning Through Art that sends artists into schools to help students learn about art, create their own works, and visit museums. As The New York Times reports, a two-year study of the program found “improvements in a range of literacy skills among students who took part.” These students “performed better in six categories of literacy and critical thinking skills — including thorough description, hypothesizing and reasoning” than students who weren’t in the program.
