Walking through Heathrow Airport not too long ago, I spotted an intriguing business idea: The HairPod. (See photo below.) It’s nifty-looking capsule in which people waiting for planes can get a quick haircut. The capsule is outfitted with all sorts of semi-hidden suctions and vacuums so customers don’t shed on the airport floor or on their seatment on the next flight.

What’s most interesting to me, though, is that it’s another sign of how businesses are targeting every bit of interstitial time we have. Waiting in line at Safeway? Check your email. On hold with the cable company? Sharpen your mind with a quick game of Scrabulous. Half-hour early for a plane? Get a trim. I tend to think this is progress, but I wonder what people, say, 150 years ago would think if they blitzed through time and discovered not just jet travel, but also HairPods.
