chi4a.jpgIn today’s New York Times, an unsigned editorial blesses the innovative Comic Book Project, a literacy program that “encourages children to plot, write and draw comic books, in many cases using themes from their own lives.”

The one-two punch of intrinsic motivation and self-expression has proven to be a powerful learning strategy. What’s more, says the Times, combining word and image appears to be especially helpful for struggling readers.

The program, now in 850 schools across the US, has also received “a big push from the current craze among adolescents for comic book clubs and for manga, a wildly popular variety of comic originating in Japan.” Very cool. Maybe this will be a breakthrough year for the genre.
