Why Americans are cynical about politics

(Note: I’m sure the Daily Show could do the same sort of clip package for the Dems)

  1. When you write “I’m sure the Daily Show could do the same sort of clip package for the Dems” it makes me want to ask: Now, who is being cynical Mr. Pink? So much of the horror of the last 8 years (the leaking of Valerie Plame’s name, lying about the evidence of WMDs, planting friendly reporters at press conferences, paying reporters for favorable editorials) has been brushed off by the public as “oh I am sure the Dems do that too” or “that’s just politics”.

We can and should expect more and aspire to better.

  2. So the Daily Show is the reason Americans are cynical about politics? Or the republicans? I’m guessing you mean the republicans are hilarious, which they are. Good post.

  3. @Confused — No, it’s not the Republicans. It’s a political class — which consists of both D’s and Rs — who think it’s all about spin and that what they say on Wednesday needn’t bear any relation to what they said on Monday.

  4. The Daily Show is typical of most television: there to sell advertising at any expense and to personally enrich those involved in those shows. While the Daily Show can be funny it does feed cynicism by focusing on the weird or distorting reality (not a slam at the Daily Show but that is the definition of comedy).

If you look at shows on CSPAN2 you find far more reasoned perspectives albeit not at all popular.
