Knock, knock. Who’s (not) there?

pizza-trick-tm.jpgMark Frauenfelder at BoingBoing points us to a perversely interesting advertising innovation posted on The Fire Wire (which is very good blog, btw.)

Realizing that littering porches with coupons isn’t all that effective, Papa John’s Pizza “has taken an innovative approach to direct marketing with its deceiving faux delivery boy & pizza appearing at your doorstep. The optical illusion actually works by affixing a sticker right below the door’s peephole with the image. Already the winner of the Gold Lion for the best use of alternative media in direct marketing at the Cannes Advertising Festival, this marketing strategy is sure to stick with consumers.”

I guarantee someone will go after them for vandalism since they are affixing something to someone’s private property.

    Dan,

Great pick up on a new medium, nothing like a good bombardment at your front door. And great interview at the U of M last week. I should note that Lou Carbone is a friend and when I noted online that I was going to your speech he was amazed you were in town. I enjoyed “a whole new mind” and like many of the countries you’ve mentioned, “we’ve always been into design up here in minnesota.” Its always good to know your book is helping people feel more confident in themselves and their origin on the planet.

Thank you for visiting the University of Minnesota.

    ajk

It’s pretty fun, I have to admit. Of course, the first thought I had was “Oh, that’s not good for security”

I think it’s very smart of them. It definitely gets your attention and money is the measure of the amount of attention you attract. If someone came by and stuck that on my door around dinner time, I might just order a Papa John’s pizza. The number is right in front of my face, after all.
