  • Word of the year: Cast your ballot

Webster’s New World Dictionary is choosing its word of the year for 2008. The final five candidates are:

Just go to the online ballot to cast your vote. But, IMHO, the choice is easy. I’d never heard of two of these words and I’ve never used two others. But one of these words I’ve deployed many times — and I suspect it’s going to remain in the lexicon around far longer than, say, selective cybernasia sickness.

Hmmm. I’ll got for selective ignorance — even though it’s two words, not one — because there’s so much of it going around.
      What’s your ‘choice is easy’?

Call me flippant, if you will, but my favourite word this year is:

Intaxication : Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.
A friend sent me a list of like words – which I’ve placed on my site. If the morning coffee doesn;t shoot out your nose I shall be, as they say, a monkey’s uncle.

If there is a category for most overused word, I vote for “initiative.” Couple that with “start-up” and we have god-awful wordiness…
